Truth Itself

The Prayerful Life No. 36

Jul 17, 2014

Saying For Today: Silence frees us, though somewhat painfully at times, from the ignorance that parades itself as wisdom, the fear that postures itself as faith, and the intellectual laziness that constumes itself as loyalty to tradition.

There is hunger for ordinary bread, and there is hunger for love, for kindness, for thoughtfulness and this is the great poverty that makes people suffer so much.

The guru would lead worship in the evening. A cat would interrupt the meeting. So, the guru had the cat tied up in the meeting place.

Following the guru's demise, the cat continued to be tied up during the evening worship. This continued until the cat, too, died.

The worshipers got another cat. They would tie it up during evening worship, as the guru tied up the first cat.

Centuries later, learned disciples of the guru that first tied up a cat in worship, produced theological treatises on the significance of tying up a cat during worship.

Prayerfulness opens our heart to Reality, and intimacy with that Reality. In the light of that Absolute, all truths not only pale in importance, but many so-call truths are seen to be nothing more than past customs that became taught as timeless and unalterable.

Silence frees us, though somewhat painfully at times, from the ignorance that parades itself as wisdom, the fear that postures itself as faith, and the intellectual laziness that constumes itself as loyalty to tradition. Why? Prayerfulness arises from Truth Itself, from before and, in some sense, beyond customs and traditions and teachings. While truths arise conditioned by time and place, even as untruths do, Truth Itself is Presence, is Grace.
